A documentary film about gentrification
<The Structure of Goliath>

I did not know the place called Pungdong until 2003. However in 2004, by a friend.
I heard about this place where there had been a hard struggle isolated from the outside. Native residence people were fighting agaist the Korean National Housing Corporation for their residence rights. KHNC evicted people violently, mobilizing a large physical force, which was an usual practice for decadess.
Eventually, after a long fighting and negociation, native residence people who lived in pungdong got a permanent rental housing and temporary house during the building time. In all the residence strugglles ever in korea, it’s maybe the first case were this was obtained. But Nambyon Che (leader of the protest group) got a trial and went to prison for 30 mnnths, just because th fought for survival. He spent almost one year in prison and was released in probation in the third trial. Even gangsters paid to evict people were released on probation in the first trial.
2003년까지 풍동이라는 곳에 대해서 알지 못했다. 그렇지만 2004년, 외부로부터 고립된 채 힘겹게 투쟁하는 이 곳에 대해서 들었다. 원-거주민들은 한국주택공사를 상대로 거주권을 위해 싸워왔다. 주택공사는 10년 이상 훈련된 대규모 진압 기동대를 통해 사람들을 강제 퇴거 시켰다.
결국 싸움과 협상이 지난 후에 풍동에 살던 원-거주민들은 영구적인 임대 주택을 받았고, 건설 기간 동안 가건물에서 살았다. 아마도 이것은 한국에서의 모든 원-거주민들의 투쟁 중에서 협상을 한 첫 사례일 것이다. 하지만 철거 대책위원회의 채 남병 대표는 생존을 위해 싸웠다는 근거로 약 1년간 세 번의 구속 조사와 2년 6개월 동안 징역 형을 받았고, 용역이란 이름으로 고용된 폭력배들은 채 대표의 첫 번째에 구속 조사 때 함께 구치소에 보내졌으나 바로 석방 되었다.
